Happenings Beyond the Lion

Evidence of a Tinkerer

At first glance, one might view this 1906 house, and notice little more than its charm.  But if you look at it closely, there is evidence of a Tinkerer in residence.  The type of clues only Sherlock himself would notice, but they are there if you look with an examining eye.

Wait a minute!  What is that red thing on the roof?  Is that curtain blowing just a bit out of the upstairs window?  A stroll upstairs is necessary for investigating further.

He may think that I'd never notice.  But what he doesn't know is that I think and wonder just like he does and I have much more experience, so he's no match!  Opening the door, the breeze hits me in the face and I have no doubt about what he's been up to.  I know his love for paper airplanes.  I also know that in order for him to really test out a build on a new design, he would open the window to decrease limitations on the flight.  And once it left the premises, he was on to something else without a thought of the plane's final destination.

And, there it is.  The view of the plane if I hang half my body out of the window from the second story.  Which leaves me wondering what I'll do to get it down?  I'll leave it for the next east wind to carry it on.  So maybe it hasn't had its final destination.  Maybe there are many new adventures ahead for the little red paper airplane.

Since it's sprinkling outside, I know that Tinkerers don't sit still.  They venture on to other projects, so it doesn't take me long to find his path.  His sewing machine sits there, guts exposed.  I've watched him take paper towel dispensers apart at school to see how they work.  He just had to do it.  He had to see how it all worked.  "How does the touch of my foot to the pedal allow a piece of thread to bound fabric together?"

After answering his questions about his sewing machine, he rested for a bit in the playroom.  I wasn't there, but I know him.  With a hop and a bounce, he belly-flopped onto his beanbag. And after laying there for a moment, he wondered what was inside this marvelous object, so big and soft and accommodating to his flight landings.  And since it is made of fabric and since he has full knowledge and understanding of how the sewing machine works (in fact, he probably proclaimed himself master of the sewing machine), he cut a temporary hole to see the secret contents of the comfy beanbag.  Before long, the contents were no longer secret.  In fact, the contents were everywhere!  And before he knew it, he was testing the physical properties of the squishy, white pellets, formerly the secret contents of the beanbag.  "Will they vibrate with the beat of the drums?"  And with a sprinkle here and a sprinkle there, he tested the movement of the pellets with the wonderful rhythms of the drums, enjoying their dance moves across the floor with every hit of the stick to the set.  That is until nature called.

And after using the restroom, he flushed the toilet.  "How does the touch of my finger to the handle make all my business go down the hole?"  So, he removed the lid and explored, plunging his fingers below the water, tugging on chains, lifting flaps, figuring it all out.  And he almost got away without anyone knowing about his exploration and discovery.  But the lid was so slippery for little hands to hold.  And since he's a Tinkerer, he put it back together the best way he knew, and he left the restroom proclaiming himself a professional of all things related to the toilet.

And that was just one, drizzly day of the Tinkerer who takes up residence in the unsuspecting purple house.  But, he's no match for his mama!  I know him, so I'll always be one step behind him.
